A Tour of Palermo

A Tour of Palermo

The next stop on our travels was a quick stop and tour of the city of Palermo, Italy.  We had been here before, so this time, we took a bit of an outskirts of the city tour.

#
Palermo was founded back in 734 BC by the Phoenicians and was originally called “Sis”, which means “flower”.  Later, known as Panormus, it became part of the Roman Republic and Empire for over a thousand years.

As we rode up to get a view of Palermo from on high, the true size of the city became apparent.  The population of Palermo’s urban area is estimated at just under 900,000, the metropolitan area is estimated to be about 1.2 million, which makes it the fifth largest population in Italy.

After a drive down from the high area above Palermo, we visited a beach area.  The beach house sitting on the beach is quite impressive.  There was a sort of boardwalk/pier area around the actual building, and we were told there was a restaurant inside.  It could be a nice, relaxing way to spend a day!

We ended our day in Palermo with a stroll on Mondello Beach.  It was nice to be able to walk along the beach, and not have it overrun with sunbathers on the beach.  What’s next on our itinerary?  A step back into history that had been buried for years!

Enjoy!!
