Cheticamp, Nova Scotia

After we set up our camp in Cheticamp, we decided to drive around the town…..or actually across the bay from the town!

Cheticamp and St. Peter’s Church

The little town of Cheticamp certainly is home to a large church!  The spire of St. Peter’s Church has long been a landmark to fisherman and sailors returning after a trip or a long day at sea.  The town runs the length of the coastline, at least the commercial part of town. What that means is that just about all the restaurants in town offer a view of the water!  One other interesting note about the town – it’s home to Elizabeth LeFort, a legendary hooked rug maker. There are studios in town offering classes, too.

Enragee Point Lighthouse

As we drove around the small rural road (read “dirt”) past the lovely view of the town, we came to the lighthouse on the point of the island on which we were driving.  The best view of the lighthouse is from afar, as there is a fence around the entire lighthouse area.

When I turned around from the lighthouse, this was the wonderful view!  Even tho the day was sunny, there was a low cloud bank that road just on top of the water.  The tiny yellow flowers in the meadow like grass add a bright pop of color, too.

As we started back on the small road we drove out to the lighthouse, we saw these sheep grazing peacefully in the meadow.  Talk about an idyllic setting!

Peggy’s Cove and Peaceful Memorial

One day, while camping at Hubbards, Nova Scotia, we took a drive to Peggy’s Cove and the lighthouse there.  It’s something that most folks will talk about, asking us if we had been there, or encouraging us to check it out.  On the way to the lighthouse, we also came across the memorial built to honor those who died on Swiss Air Flight 111.

On September 2, 1998, Swiss Air Flight 111 (a MacDonald Douglas MD-11), in route from JFK Airport, NYC, to Geneva, Switzerland, went down about 5 miles off the coast in a triangulated point between Peggy’s Cove and another small town in Nova Scotia, called Bayswater.  All 229 passengers and crew aboard were killed, making this the deadliest crash in MD-11 aviation history.  Fisherman from both towns and others along this coastal area assisted as they could in the search and recovery of any remains.  The cause of this crash was determined to be a fire on board the aircraft that quickly spread out of control.  As a result of the investigation of this crash, the FAA instituted new guidelines for all planes to conform to, so to make flying safer for all of those who came after.  This memorial, and the one in Bayswater (which lists the names of all those on board) are 2 points of a triangle.  The third point in out in the North Atlantic Ocean, the site of the actual crash.  I know this sounds a bit odd, but it is a remarkably peaceful memorial area.

As pretty as the lighthouse is close up, I actually prefer the further away images that I took.  I feel like you can get a better sense of where it’s located in relation to the North Atlantic Ocean.  This view is from the walkway to the Swiss Air Flight 111 Memorial.

Since we were driving down along a peninsula and a couple of islands while exploring Digby Neck, and Long and Brier Islands, we got to see some wonderful shoreline views!  I’ve selected the best of the best – take a look!
