End & Beginning
At this time of year, I cant help but have the thoughts of things that end.  However, for every ending, somewhere, somehow, there is a beginning.

Kitty Wisdom
I didn’t have to travel far for this week’s postcard!  My little kitty, Tatoosh, provided the inspiration.  And, kitties certainly know about stillness!

Don’t Pick
Why do we always want to pick one thing to enjoy about an experience?  For once, let’s not!

Yesterday’s Picnic
For this week’s Postcard, I looked back at a trip earlier this year to Big Bend National Park in Texas.  Just down from the campground where we were, there was a picnic area, with table under some cottonwood trees.  Reminds me of picnics in days gone by.

Serenity on the Shore
I was walking, or rather, standing on the shore of a lake while Jeff was playing fetch with Miki – throwing a branch in the lake.  Altho I do enjoy watching her and her love of the water, I was also drawn to the moving still life on shore.  The lake was creating gentle waves as they touched the shore, and yet the reeds in the water seemed unaffected by them.  A moment of serenity.

Perspective
Jeff and I went exploring the other week and ended up on a dirt back road that took us to the top of Capilla Peak, here in New Mexico.  As we were heading back down the road, he stopped so I could photograph some sunflowers growing along the roadside.  I took several images and then happened to look down.  I had a great shot available to me of the top of a sunflower, looking down onto it.  I took it and then converted it to a crayon drawing.  I kept thinking about how different, in a way, the sunflower looked from this unfamiliar angle.  My mind kept trying to turn it sideways to make it seem more “normal”.  It sort of reminded me of however life appears to us, it’s often due to our personal perspective.  That’s also true for everyone else, so it’s probably best if we don’t take too many people at their word as truth when circumstances are a bit murky or confused!  Something to think about…..

Back Patio
This week, I didn’t travel far from home inspiration.  I was particularly content just sitting on our back patio.  It’s quite the change from how I grew up – in the city.  And, as I think about the contrast in life between the city and country, I couldn’t help but think that the wild roses growing on a bush just off our patio was more lovely than any city sight I’ve ever seen.  And, so that’s this week’s thought…..

Christmas Anywhere
I’m never surprised to see Christmas whenever I walk thru the woods.  Even in the heart of summertime, there are always a few leaves that seem to want to hurry autumn, and then winter, along.  The natural colors of Christmas are always a treat to find, no matter the season!

Learn from History
Driving along a secondary road near our home, I frequently pass by this solitary windmill.  It always makes me think of the farm or ranch that used to be where it remains.  But, the people who lived there have moved on.  Different skills were learned and people then left.  Conversely, I think about things today – the way people are sometimes clamoring for situations that their parents and grandparents worked hard to overcome.  And, the old saying is true – “Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it”.  Let us learn from our history, and not keep making the same mistakes over and over.  To create this journal page, I converted an image of the windmill to a colored pencil drawing, added text and other texture elements.  It’s rather simple, but then so is the base image.

Simple and Complex
Recently, Jeff & I were exploring the back roads around Red River, NM, in the northern part of the state, and came across a small lake.  It was definitely off the beaten path, altho popular with the local folks.  We walked along the shoreline until we could find a good place for Miki, our German Shepherd, to take a swim, one of her favorite activities.  As we followed the path around the lake, I took a few photos of the lake, and appreciated its apparent stillness.  I was reminded of the phrase, “still waters run deep” and it reminded me of this lake.  It also reminded me of life, how many of our lives look simple, as we run around doing all our daily chores.  But, under the surface, we all have complexities in our lives, trials and tribulations, moments of joy and sorrow, and ongoing struggles.

Epitome of Freedom
The other day when we were driving in northern New Mexico, there was a patch of wildflowers, thistle and yellow coneflowers, along the side of the road.  Jeff, as always, indulges my creative fancy, so he pulled over to the side of the road and let me go out among the flowers (and the sticklers!) to photograph these beauties to my heart’s content.  I saw a lovely butterfly fluttering madly on one of the thistles, and began snapping my shutter, hoping to catch him in an open wing moment.  I was lucky, and one of the images did capture him in a nice position.  I converted the image I captured to a colored pencil drawing to include in this week’s journal page.  I then thought about a quote I saw a while ago, by a person whose name I don’t recall, about how birds and butterflies are the epitome of freedom.  I added some birds to my travel art journal page and the heart of the quote.

Thursday Travel Musings – July 7, 2017
Daisies
A few weeks ago, as I walked along the Chama River, I looked down and saw some beautiful little daisies.  I was struck at how there were so many magnificently large things to see, like the river, the sky and the landscape around me.  However, I was reminded that there are also some tiny treasures as well!

Thursday Travel Musings

Mountain Wildflowers

This art travel journal page was inspired by a wildflower walk that I took in the Sandia Mountains, near my home.  The wildflowers are like small treasures.  The journal page has a CitraSolv background page that I created, and a quote from Frank Lloyd Wright also as part of the background.  I took photos that I took of some of the flowers and converted them to drawings.  Such delicate blooms that are really quite tough to be able to stand up to the conditions in the mountains.  Maybe that can hold true for us – it’s ok to be both tough and gentle.  Perhaps a contradiction, but look how well it works for wildflowers.
